Celebrate Science
(8 November 2012)
Celebrate Science included a wide range of stimulating science themed events and activities focused around a giant science marquee situated on Palace Green, as well as at various University locations around the city. The aim was to stimulate an interest in science and to inspire young people to study science in the future while putting the University at the heart of a fun, high-profile community event.
Running from Tuesday 30th October to Thursday 1st November 2012, this year proved to be bigger and better than ever with over 5,500 people coming to the marquee, an increase of 60% in visitors compared to the 2011 event!
The activities provided by the Physics Department explored both the small and the very large. Visitors of all ages were able to join members of the ICC to view the international award-winning 3D film ‘Cosmic Origins’ and marvel at how the universe began. Members of the CfAI were also on hand to demonstrate how we can improve our views of the very small by adapting techniques developed for use with the largest telescopes on the planet.
A large number of staff, postgraduate and undergraduate students from the department were involved in the demonstrations over the three days. Congratulations to all involved in a hugely successful event.
