Opening of Refurbished Teaching Laboratories

(13 December 2012)

On 12th December the 2012 Rochester Lecturer (Professor Alain Aspect, Institut d’Optique, France) officially opened the newly refurbished physics teaching laboratories.

Over the last 18 months millions of pounds have been invested and many of the laboratories have been upgraded as part of Durham  University’s ongoing programme for refurbishment of teaching rooms.

Typically 600 undergraduates a week do experiments in the physics teaching laboratories.  The refurbishment allows maximum flexibility within the teaching area, with the space used for experiments, small-group teaching such as tutorials through to research seminars.

The refurbishment has enabled us to provide a permanent  home for the flagship  Team Project activity, which has seen Durham set the national agenda for Group Industrial Projects via the institute of Physics Higher Education STEM Programme (http://www.dur.ac.uk/physics/news/?itemno=14109&rehref=%2Fphysics%2Fnews%2Farchive%2F&resubj=%20Headlines).

Further details of the teaching activities performed in the laboratories can be found in the following web resource http://labs.physics.dur.ac.uk/general/welcome.php.
