which showcases some of the world's finest astronomical pictures. The beautiful colour picture, of a star-forming region of the Milky Way known as the Lagoon and Triffid nebulae, was created in Durham from greyscale images taken with the Pan-STARRS (Panoramic Survey Telescope & Rapid Response System) telescope in Hawaii. This is fitted with a 1.4 gigapixel camera, which enables wide-field shots such as this to be taken. Durham University is a member of the Pan-STARRS PS1 consortium.
