Under the Terms of Reference for Boards of Studies, as described in the Durham University Learning and Teaching Handbook, there shall be a Board of Studies Education Committee to advise on all aspects of teaching and learning for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Committee shall include the Secretary, the Director of Postgraduate Studies and the Director of Undergraduate Studies. The Board of Studies shall elect a Chairman/Chairwoman of the Education Committee from among its members. The appointment shall be for a period to be agreed at the time of the election. The spirit of the Committee shall be: to promote the teaching of physics and astronomy to the highest standard, to encourage teaching initiatives and good practice; to help the department sustain its teaching assessment grade.
The Committee is responsible for: advising the Board of Studies on the formulation and implementation of strategy, policies and guidelines covering all aspects of teaching and learning and the associated delivery process, including quality assurance of teaching and assessment; overseeing programme review and monitoring, and advising the Board of Studies on curriculum development and changes in regulations and frameworks for degree programmes; receiving reports from the Faculty of Science Sub-Committee of the University Education Committee, via the Director of Undergraduate Studies and transmitting these and any recommendations arising from the consideration of the report to the Board of Studies; receiving reports from the Postgraduate Committee, via the Director of Postgraduate studies, and from the Management Committee for the M.Sc. in Particles, Strings and Cosmology, via its representative, on all postgraduate matters relating to teaching and learning (to include the taught M.Sc. in Elementary Particle Theory and any M.Phil, M.Sc. and Ph.D. research programmes in Physics) and transmitting these and any recommendations arising from the consideration of the report to the Board of Studies; receiving reports from the Course Directors for each level of undergraduate study and transmitting these and any recommendations arising from the consideration of the report to the Board of Studies; receiving reports from the Management Committee for the Natural Sciences Degree, via the Board of Studies representative, and transmitting these and any recommendations arising from the consideration of the report to the Board of Studies; receiving reports from the Staff-Student Consultative Committee, via its Chairman, and transmitting these and any recommendations arising from the consideration of the report to the Board of Studies; receiving reports from the Laboratories Committee, via its Chairman, and transmitting these and any recommendations arising from the consideration of the report to the Board of Studies; receiving reports from the Admissions Tutor and transmitting these and any recommendations arising from the consideration of the report to the Board of Studies; receiving reports from the Outreach Coordinator and transmitting these and any recommendations arising from the consideration of the report to the Board of Studies; receiving reports from the Board of Examiners, including External Examiners Reports, via its Secretary, and transmitting these and any recommendations arising from the consideration of the report to the Board of Studies.
