Under the Terms of Reference for Board of Studies, as described in the Durham University Learning and Teaching Handbook, the Head of Department is responsible for interpreting and implementing the University Safety Policy to the needs of their Department and for reporting defects and safety hazards relating to their buildings. A Health and Safety Committee has been established within the department to assist the Head of Department with this task. Membership of this Committee shall include members of the department with specific safety duties, and representatives from relevant activities and interest groups within the Department. The spirit of the Committee shall be: to ensure that University Health and Safety Policy is adopted by all members of the Department; to ensure that best practice is adopted by those dealing with health and safety matters; to monitor safety performance and suggest remedial action where necessary; to suggest ways of improving the safety management systems of the Department.
The Safety Committee is responsible for: advising the Board of Studies on the formulation and implementation of strategy, policies and guidelines covering all aspects of health and safety within the department; carrying out an annual self -inspection programme as required by the University Health and Safety regulations, receiving reports of these inspections and transmitting any recommendations arising from the consideration of these reports to the Board of Studies; monitoring accident statistics and acting on any significant trends in the information obtained; ensuring that current health and safety recommended practice and legislation are adopted by the Department; implementing any recommendations made by the University’s Health and Safety Committee; receiving reports on the status of the continuous programme of portable electrical appliance testing within the Department and transmitting any recommendations arising from the consideration of these reports to the Board of Studies; receiving reports of risk assessments of work carried out within the Department and transmitting any recommendations arising from the consideration of these reports to the Board of Studies; preparing the departmental plan for Health and Safety.
