Lecture: The Search for Intelligent Life

A lecture entitled 'The Search for Intelligent Life' will take place in the Ustinov Room, Van Mildert College. The speaker will be Sir Arnold Wolfendale FRS.

Sir Arnold Wolfendale FRS is a British astrophysicist. He was Astronomer Royal from 1991 to 1995. Sir Arnold graduated with a BSc in Physics from the University of Manchester in 1948, followed by a PhD in 1953 and DSc in 1970. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1977. He retired from teaching in 1992 and was knighted in 1995. He has been President of the Royal Astronomical Society, the Institute of Physics and the European Physical Society. Sir Arnold was Fellow of Experimental Physics of the Royal Institution from 1996 to 2002. He holds many honorary degrees and has been awarded a number of prizes. During his career he has held academic posts at the universities of Manchester, Durham, Ceylon and Hong Kong, and was Head of the Physics Department at Durham where he remains an Emeritus Professor. He is still active in research.
