Title: Rereading Glaucon’s challenge: transformative goods in Plato’s Republic
How - if at all - are the views about goodness offered by Socrates in the Republic consistent with what seems to be expressed at Euthydemus 281, where Socrates implies that wisdom is the only good 'itself by itself'? I argue that the main argument of the Republic revises the assumptions on which Glaucon makes his challenge in Book 2; and that this gives Plato a radical and important account of the nature of intrinsic goods: 'transformative' goods.
