Buenas Dias People and Planeters,

Before we get started:

There is still one place left for Shared Planet 2008 next weekend 21st-23rd November in Birmingham!! The cost of the whole trip which includes transport and accommodation is going to be £42.14 each so don't miss out! If I don't convince you maybe this will:

http://peopleandplanet.org/shared-planet-08/programme

Right lets get down to it:

1. Next Meeting
2. Student Climate Project Meeting
3. Talk by Wilf Richards on Transition Towns: what, why, how? hosted by Durham Friends of the Earth.
4. Shared Planet Facebook Event Group
5. Add yourself to a petition to Gordon Brown to challenge corporate power and change the economic system.

------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Next Meeting

The next meeting as usual is going to be tomorrow Monday 17th November in ER 157 at 7:30.

We are going to be continuing with pursuing our action on RBS on 25th November. This will include making posters and leaflets, planning a strategem as to what we are going to do when we get in there and so on. Should be a laarf!

Also like we said earlier in the week please come prepared with two questions that you might want to ask RBS with regards to their nasty fossil fuel spending sprees. For more info see here:

http://peopleandplanet.org/ditchdirtydevelopment/respondtorbs

---------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Student Climate Project Meeting

There will be a Student Climate Project meeting before the next meeting tomorrow at 6:30 in ER 157. We will be further discussing our plans for a performing arts evening (namely poetry) in Fishtank towards Christmas. Come along even if you have never been before!

----------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Talk by Wilf Richards on Transition Towns: what, why, how? hosted by Durham Friends of the Earth.

The talk will be at 7:30 in 48 Old Elvet on Tuesday 18th November (this Tuesday!).

The talk should be very interesting. The idea of Transition Towns is linked to the thesis that our present society depends massively on the ready availability of oil (for both transport and agricultural fertilisers etc.); that oil supplies are likely to peak some time around now; and that local communities should therefore be forward looking in planning for a future which is bound to be very different.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Shared Planet Facebook Event Group

If you are going to Shared Planet then it would be wise to add yourself to the facebook group so that we can contact one another in a more informal way about informal details:
http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/event.php?eid=43326761319&ref=ts

And don't forget to add yourself to the group booking so that you can sign up for workshops:

http://peopleandplanet.org/publicphp/sp08_book.php

I'm sooooooooooooooooooooooo excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

----------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Add yourself to a petition to Gordon Brown to challenge corporate power and change the economic system.

FOE are contriving a petition against the current economic system, which states:

"The financial crisis has graphically demonstrated to people in rich countries what those in poor countries have known for years: the current international economic system does not work.

We need a radically different economic system which puts people and the planet first.

The world's poorest people must have a full and equal say in developing this system - decisions must not be taken by bodies that only represent rich countries."

If you want to add yourself to this petition (seeing as challenging corporate power is one of our big campaigns this year!) then click here:

Have a fun week and I'll hopefully see you tomorrow!

Howdy People and Planeters!

Here’s what we’ve got this week:

1. Shared Planet!

2. Next Meeting

3. Facebook Group

1. Shared Planet

Well it’s that time of year again and we really need to start getting final numbers together for those who are interested in coming to the very exciting People and Planet National Forum which takes place Friday 21st- Sunday 23rd November in Birmingham. There are going to be loads of big speakers there including Caroline Lucas the Green Party Leader and Tony Juniper the Friends of the Earth director. There will be workshops, panel debates and most importantly a big style party for Saturday night. The lot! It is a really inspiring event, not to be missed!

A quick lowdown on the prices:

· We are going to book a coach to go down in to make transport slightly cheaper. The amount that the coach will costs will depend on precise numbers, if a lot of us are coming it will cost about £20 but if it’s less than that it could be up to £27 (there and back). We will be setting off Friday at about 5pm and leaving Sunday afternoon (time to be confirmed as yet).

· The cost of the actual event will be £15 including lunch and breakfast. We will have to go out for a meal on Saturday night as well as dinner isn’t included so save a bit of cash for that. Probably best to bring a picnic tea down for Friday night as well when we are travelling down.

· Accommodation is also £3 a night, you will need to bring a sleeping bag along with you!

This means the total cost will be from £41 to £48 which includes EVERYTHING. The more people that come the cheaper it will be! Hurrah! For a fun-packed weekend such as this it will definitely be worth it though. Bit of a cliché but you can’t afford not to miss it!

If you are interested in coming I am going to ask for confirmation on Monday 3rd November midnight as I am going to make definite bookings next week (you can still go down on your own either way it just might be nice and cheaper if we all go down together!). So if you want to go down with us then please send me an email with your name and your phone number so that I can put you on the booking form. We will then be asking for payment as and from next Wednesday 5th November (Remember, remember!)

2. Next Meeting

There will be a meeting on Monday at 7:30 in ER157. We will be continuing in our plans to tackle corporate power, this time forging our ideas into action. Be there!

Also there will be a few fair trade Durham People and Planet stash t-shirts up for grabs which I will bring along so you might want to bring some extra cash along for those!

3. Facebook Group

Also join the facebook group to have regular updates on what we are up to, as well as blogs on what has been going on in each of the meetings:

The Hand Stunt - Sucess!

by admin on 09 Nov 2007

For those of you who haven't heard People and Planet formed a big oil-print hand made of people on Castle green (or whatever its called). The idea was to create a high-impact photo - which turned out beautifully, and generated a fair bit of interest among castle students.
The photo should be on the site, facebook, and hopefully one or two student newspapers in the near future. In the meantime, don't forget the stall today and tomorrow.
