About
The Durham University Oxfam Society aims to raise awareness of national and international issues related to overcoming poverty and to fundraise for Oxfam GB. We meet weekly every Thursday.
Oxfam is an international charity which works on a variety of issues with the aims of aid delivery and development work with the goal of overcoming poverty and suffering.
Issues that the society campaigns on are decided by members but cover the broad areas that Oxfam works in such as:
- The devastating effect of natural disasters and conflict
- The lack of access people in developing countries have to health and education
- Gender inequality around the world
- The impact of climate change on the worlds’ poor
- The impact that debt and aid has to the economic development of poorer countries

Oxfam member projects
We have a few campaigns and events set out for the year but we want to campaign and organise events on things that our members feel strongly about and so if you have any ideas about issues you think are important or different events please come to the meetings with your ideas and we will discuss them.
The society encourages individuals to take ownership of their ideas and projects. The exec will provide as much or as little support as you want and get resources etc from Oxfam for you, but we want to make sure that you have the opportunity to get your voice heard and promote issues that are important to you. So, if there is a particular campaign idea you’ve been sitting on, we can help you give it the publicity it deserves!
Outreach in Newcastle
As well as the events run by the Oxfam society in Durham we will also be involved in Outreach work in Newcastle. Outreach work involves going to music events (last year some Oxfam campaigners from Durham went to Editors) talking to people at the event about a particular issue, it may be climate change, Robin Hood tax etc to raise awareness of the issues that Oxfam works on and you get to go to the event for free and you are guaranteed time to enjoy the event after you’ve done a bit of campaigning!
