New Website Design
Posted on: 31/10/2009The long anticipated website revamp is here!
Along with the much needed design change from a purple/yellow colour scheme, there have been quite a few under-the-hood changes.
Most important to note is that the file address system has been modified to a more structured system. However, this unfortunately means links designed for the previous layout will generally go to the home page instead of their intended destination.
Also some of the pages, such as the photos pages, haven't been transferred into the new design yet. They will be reinstated as soon as they have been updated.
All the important content should be here, but if you find something is missing, please let me know at the club email address: orienteering.club@dur.ac.uk
Social And Circuits
Posted on: 12/10/2009Don't forget the first social of the year is tonight! Meet at Kingsgate Bar in the DSU at 1930 for a bar crawl and some free pizza :-)

Introductory Session

Next Wednesday (14 October) we have an introductory session in Houghall Woods. This will be held in Houghall Woods (the area of forest behind Grey College and the Botanical Gardens). There will be 3 courses on offer, all about 1 - 1.5km long, you can do as many or as few as you like. You'll be given a map of the whole of Houghall Woods, so if you feel like you haven't done enough exercise then you can go for a run afterwards :-). Turn up anytime between 1400 and 1600, you do not need to be there right from the beginning of the session.
The start will be at the top of Cardiac Hill, by the Psychology Building.
If you would like to be added to the mailing list or have any questions, please email me: rachel.cooper (at) durham.ac.uk

- The format is probably different to any relay you've done before, but will make for a really fun event. Nine runs, four people, three maps. Tactics galore!
- It's going to be awesome.

University Orienteering Club Of The Year
Posted on: 16/03/2009University Orienteering Club of the Year competition
"Congratulations to the University of Durham Orienteering Club (UDOC) which beat off a strong challenge from Sheffield University Orienteering Club (ShUOC) to win the University Orienteering Club of the Year competition. Whilst both clubs have good programmes of introductory activities for beginners at the start of the new academic year and encourage all their members to continue through regular training and trips to events, Durham's outreach work with a local comprehensive school was a contributory factor in their success as judged by a panel from Development Committee..........."
BUSA
Posted on: 09/03/20095th at BUSA! - Narrowly beaten by Cambridge (boo!) but never mind - GO DURHAM!!
Next Introductory Session
Posted on: 23/10/2008Thank you to everyone who came along yesterday afternoon, I hope you all had fun and enjoyed the courses.
Next Wednesday (29 October) there will be a similar coaching session. This time we are meeting at Fountains Hall, in the grounds of Grey College. It's the place where the Grey Pizza Bar is in the evenings if that helps :) !
There will be 3 courses on offer again, and like this week, you can turn up at any time between 1430 and 1600 and do as many or as few courses as you like. There will still be something for everyone, no matter what experience you have or what level of fitness you are (we had a participant with a broken leg yesterday, and at the other end of the scale someone who had run for England, so really, it's for everyone!) It will again be completely free.
Looking ahead, we are also holding a 'balloon score event' on the morning (not too early, don't worry!) of Sunday 2 November. This is also going to be in Houghall Woods. There will be a competitive element, but don't let that put you off, it will be a lot of fun. This will be followed by lunch and/or drinks in the New Inn (opposite the Uni Library). I'll send out more details about this next week.
Free Coaching Sessions
Posted on: 17/10/2008We are organising some coaching and introductory sessions over the next 2 weeks. They are all going to be held in various parts of Houghall Woods (the area of forest behind Grey College and the Botanical Gardens). They are completely FREE OF CHARGE (even if you aren't a paid up member of the club) and are suitable for EVERYONE - all abilities and all levels of fitness.
The first one is on Wednesday 22 October (next Wednesday) from 1430 - 1600. It will be geared at beginners, but if you are a more experienced orienteer then please don't be discouraged from coming along, there will be plenty of opportunity to make the courses a little more tricky. There will be 3 courses on offer, all about 1 - 1.5km long, you can do as many or as few as you like. You'll be given a map of the whole of Houghall Woods, so if you feel like you haven't done enough exercise then you can go for a run afterwards :-). Turn up anytime between 1430 and 1600, you do not need to be there right from the beginning of the session.
The start will be at the top of Cardiac Hill, by the Psychology Building.
There will be another on Wednesday 29 October and then a fun, social event on Sunday 2 November, but I'll send out details of those nearer the time.
Hope to see lots of you there.

UDOC AGM
Posted on: 09/06/2008Tomorrow sees the long-awaited UDOC AGM. It will take place in Van Mildert College at 4pm, and shouldn't take too long. It's probably best if we meet outside the Combination Room - go in through the main entrance off the forecourt, and turn right. Don't go down the stairs, and at the end turn left and plonk yourself on a sofa.
The agenda is:
1. Welcome
2. Apologies
3. Captain's report
4. Treasurer's report
5. Elections for Captain, Vice-Captain, Treasurer, Social Sec and Webmaster
6. AOB
If you can't make the meeting but would like to stand for a position, please let me know by 3.30 tomorrow.

University Development Fund
Posted on: 11/02/2008The Personal Development Award Fund exists to help students participate in extra curricular activities, offered through the Colleges and DSU societies, who otherwise would be unable to do so due to financial constraints.
Applications are means tested and require the students to complete a short application form including a personal statement of how their chosen activity will benefit their personal development (outside of academic commitments). There are no deadlines as such and the amount of funding is limited.
Further information, the Eligibility Criteria and Application Form are at: http://www.dur.ac.uk/student.finance/eca/personaldevelopment/
Happy New Year
Posted on: 16/01/2008I know this is about two weeks late, but happy new year to everyone! I'm sure training/exercise is high on everyone's resolutions list, so don't forget to come along to circuit training Thursdays at 6pm (in the aerobics studio at Maiden Castle) and club terrain runs should make a comeback soon! Anyone's welcome.
If you would like to join the club mailing list please email me (Liz), my email address is on the contacts page.
Introductory Event Results
Posted on: 12/10/2007The results from the freshers' introductory event are now on-line. There were some very close times, but congratulations go to Russell who won in a time of 17:10. Thanks to all those who came and gave it a go - I hope to see you all again soon :)
Freshers' Social
Posted on: 05/10/2007All welcome to come along. Meeting at Grey bar at 8pm this Sunday. We'll be going on to Trevs, Mary's (where some people might attempt a certain challenge, but I wouldn't know anything about that!), then to the Bailey. Do as many as there are open then from the best college of them all (Hatfield) we will head for Klute on a Sunday. Which is known to be quality quality fun. Then if you stay long enough, Ben will buy us all pizza from Patrick's (at the bottom of Elvet Bridge opposite the Swan and Three Cygnets pub).
Introductory Sprint Event This Sunday
Posted on: 04/10/2007This Sunday UDOC are hosting an introductory event based around the hill colleges in Durham. The event is TOTALLY FREE, even if you haven't joined the club, and is a really exciting and fast-paced version of the sport. The course is just over 2km long, and takes you through the majority of the hill colleges, including some bits you'll probably never have seen before, even if you've been here for years! All you need to bring along is a pair of trainers, and some clothes which are suitable for running in. Everything else will be provided for you, including a map with the course overprinted on it, a compass to help you orientate it, and some helpful tuition if you're a complete beginner.
The start and finish of the event are in the same place, which is at VAN MILDERT college, opposite the Elvet Hill Road car park. You can see the exact location here. For those who are in Mildert, it's on the grass between Tunstall block and the main road. There will also be a few red and white orienteering signs with arrows on them in the vicinity to help you find us.
The start times for the event will be from 11am to 1pm, so you can lie in and recover from the night before if required. It's a true fact that a little bit of exercise does wonders for hangovers, and then you'll be fresh for the social in the evening as well! Just turn up at any time and run - you don't have to be
there for the whole two hours.
There will be a flyer for the event on-line soon

Don't forget the social this Friday - Kingsgate, 7.15pm. Go and get your Hound tickets NOW!

Posted on: 25/04/2007Due to a number of people being unable to make the Thursday lunchtime run, we are going to meet at 6:30pm instead, still at the east wing of Earth Sciences.
Udoc.org.uk Problems
Posted on: 18/04/2007As you may have noticed, we are having problems with the udoc.org.uk domain. The people who host that for us don't think that we exist, so whilst we try to sort that out, I'm afraid you'll have to type www.dur.ac.uk/orienteering.club each time. Sorry about that.
Correction
Posted on: 17/04/2007I have been informed that the photos previously credited to Liz Bridge, were in fact taken by Judy Bridge and John Bean. Thanks guys!

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!!!
Posted on: 15/03/2007Now that I've got your attention, it's time to unveil the theme for the most eagerly-awaited social event of the year - the BUSA social! The theme is to be "When I was five I wanted to be a ..." We want to see lots of firemen, nurses, astronauts, pirates and, erm, bunny rabbits (according to Google ).
Please note that 'clever' answers such as "me" and "an elite orienteer" will not be tolerated, and offenders may be punished during the beer race.
On a more serious note, I am assured that the final details will be available soon.
National Event Results
Posted on: 11/03/2007It was a fantastic weekend away in the Lake District, and many thanks to Liz for organising it all. The results from the National Event on Whitbarrow Scar are now on the results page. Best runs of the day go to Tom for 2nd place on the M21S, and Ruth for 1st (of one!) on the W20S. Congrats.
Maybe we can stay somewhere with central heating next time though!?
Silton Forest Results
Posted on: 05/03/2007As usual, the results from the events at the weekend are now on the results page. Enjoy!
White Horse Results And Lyrics To Learn!
Posted on: 27/02/2007Sunday's results from the White Horse event are now on the results page. Congrats to Thomas who won the Red course, and I'd also like to congratulate myself, if I may, for getting fastest run-in split on the Brown. We all know that's all that really matters...
Also, I think I've managed to decipher most of the lyrics to Orienteering Is My Life and they are presented below for your convenience. Knowledge will be tested at the next social:
Orienteering is my life,
Cuts right through me like a knife,
Out in the parks and out in the woods,
Especially in my neighbourhoods,
Orienteering, orienteering, orienteering, orienteering, orienteering - it's my life!
It's my life,
Orienteering is my life (x4).
Orienteering is my life,
I do it with my daughter and my son and my wife,
I love the happy feeling when I run in the woods,
That's the only feeling that I'm loving the most.
Orienteering, orienteering, orienteering, orienteering, orienteering - it's my life!
It's my life,
Orienteering is my life (x4).
I've got this feeling, this feeling to be free,
Somebody run with me.
It's my life,
Orienteering is my life (x4)
Orienteering is my life (x4)
(Ooh it's my life, come run with me)
Wolsingham Results
Posted on: 21/02/2007The results from the Wolsingham event have been up on the results page for a while, but I forgot to mention it on here. Well done to Richard who won the Brown, in what was a particularly gruelling area. UDOC domination of the north-east continues!
NATO Night Event Results
Posted on: 11/02/2007Well done to everyone who braved the ridiculous conditions yesterday for the training and night event in Hexham. The results are on the results page. Also, if you've never done night-o before, please don't be put by yesterday's experience - it isn't normally that hard!
Edinburgh Results
Posted on: 05/02/2007The results from the two events in Edinburgh at the weekend are now on the results page. Well done to Tom for whooping Scottish ass in the sprint race, and I think congratulations are in order for all of us for schooling Edinburgh in how to dance. We rocked. Fact.
BUSA ENTRIES NOW OPEN
Posted on: 01/02/2007Entries for the 2007 BUSA Orienteering Champs are now open. This year we are using a partly web-based entry system, which will fill in the paper form for you, and calculate how much you owe. Aren't we nice?
It will also let us meet the strict deadlines for numbers set by the accommodation and food providers, and leave us with more time to sort out start lists for the races. Any problems should be directed to the webmaster.
BUSA Details
Posted on: 29/01/2007The details for the 2007 BUSA Orienteering Champs, hosted by UDOC, have been updated. Head to the BUSA page to find out more about the biggest event of the year!
Swintsy And Beecroft Results
Posted on: 28/01/2007Results from today's event are now on the results page. Congrats to the two Toms who finished second on the Blue and Brown courses.
Nominations are now open for the award of worst cock-up of the day - will it be Ben for asking just too much from the soles of his shoes; Heather for a 15-minute control number 2; or Richard for his disastrous number 6, when he should really know better? All will be decided at circuits on Tuesday...
Today's Results
Posted on: 21/01/2007Today's UDOC-specific results are now available on the results page. Full results can be found on the NN Website.
Photos From The Last Social
Posted on: 09/01/2007After a substantial delay which may or may not be due to me completely forgetting to put them on here, the photos from the last social are now on the photos page for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!
Fixture List For Next Term
Posted on: 31/12/2006The fixtures which UDOC plan to attend are now on the fixtures page. Please note that transport and entries to some events will not be organised by the club (for example, the Spring Cup in Denmark and the JK in the Forest of Dean), but the details are provided if you wish to organise something on your own.
E-signup is also open for the first few events of term if you're feeling optimistic about your workload and know that you'll be free!
NE Score Champs Results
Posted on: 11/12/2006The results from the last event of term, the NE Score Champs at Goathland, are now available on the results page. Well done to Tom Billam who had the best run of the day, and also to anyone who managed to get back within the 60 minutes. That is something I think I might need to work on...
Social On Friday!
Posted on: 07/12/2006The last social of term will be tomorrow, Friday 8th. The plan is to meet at the Swan and Three Cygnets on Elvet Bridge at 7:30pm. The meal is booked for Ricardo's at 8:30pm, and will be followed by the last Hound of term (woohoo!), and a suitable punishment for Tom, following his performance at the last social :D
Burbage Moor Results
Posted on: 04/12/2006The results from the National Event at Burbage Moor yesterday are now on the results page. A fantastic turnout from UDOC, with some equally impressive results. Highlights include course wins for Liz, Ruth, Ben and Mark, along with an impressive second from Tom Billam and a fourth place finish on the elite course from Tom Bray. Well done to everyone who went, and I hope you're not all as knackered as I am!
Weekend Results And An Orienteering TUNE!
Posted on: 27/11/2006Results from the two events at the weekend are now on the results page.
More importantly, however, thanks to Tom Bray's contacts in Norway, we've been directed to a song called Orienteering Is My Life. Go and listen to it - you know you want to. (At least it's better than 'Move your body round the map'!)
Results And Social!
Posted on: 20/11/2006The results from the two events this weekend at Preston Park and Hutton Lowcross are now on the results page, along with those from the weekend before at Kielder.
Don't forget about the SOCIAL this wednesday - meet at Grey college bar at 7.30, or suffer the wrath of Tom's little biatch.
Apologies To All Internet Explorer Users - The E-Signup Will Actually Work Now
Posted on: 16/11/2006The title says it all really. I made a rookie mistake in my creation of the E-Signup and forget to check that it worked in different browsers. A simple mistake in one part of the code prevented it being displayed correctly in Internet Explorer, whilst Firefox and Mozilla just ignored the mistake, so I never realised. I'm quite embarrassed it took nearly a week to find this out, but at least it should work properly now! If anyone is still having problems, please e-mail me, the webmaster.
Events This Weekend
Posted on: 13/11/2006The details for the two events this coming weekend are now on the details page. With a sprint race on the Saturday, and a classic on the Sunday, it sounds like a great weekend of local orienteering. The preferred method of signup is now the E-signup form, rather than e-mailing Liz.
No Transport For Weekend Of 25th/26th November
Posted on: 13/11/2006Unfortunately, both Liz and Richard are away on the 25th/26th, so no transport has been arranged for the two events. Liz is trying to sort something out, but it is the least likely of the options :(
On a slightly related note, I forgot to say that it's possible to change your responses to the online signup if something crops up part way through term!
Online Signup For Events
Posted on: 11/11/2006I've had far too much time on my hands recently, and Liz's e-mail inbox is full to busting with people wanting to go to events, so I've made an online signup thingy for all you lovely people.
It's got all the rest of the events we could go to this term on it, so if you know which weekends you're free and when you're not, you can reply to them all now - much less hassle than e-mailing Liz each week! If you prefer to wait for more details before responding that's fine as well - we'll link to it whenever details of an event are sent out (it's also linked from the fixtures page).

Training This Sunday
Posted on: 03/10/2006As you have all hopefully found out at the Freshers' Fair, there is going to be a training session this Sunday, 8th October, at Hetton Lyons. There is a permanent course there which will be used as the basis for the training, which will cater to all levels of experience, from those who've never picked up a map before, to the hardcore seasoned pros.
We are leaving from outside the DSU at 10:30am and will be back by mid-afternoon. If you want to come, please e-mail Liz in advance, so that we can sort out the right number of cars. Hope to see a good turnout, and don't forget the social in the evening afterwards - 7:30 at Kingsgate!
New Term News!
Posted on: 27/09/2006Woohoo! A big welcome back for returning UDOC members, and an even bigger welcome to new Freshers! There's a packed schedule in store for the next term, starting off with the Freshers' Fair at the Three Tuns Hotel. Come on down to sign up for what is arguably the best orienteering club in Durham.
Following that there's the first social of the year. Social Secs Tom and Kathryn have been racking their brains all summer to find a way to make this the best night out ever. What have they come up with? Bar crawl starting at Kingsgate in the DSU at 7:30pm on Sunday 8th October, followed by making Liz pay for pizza for everyone at Collingwood. Should be mint.
Other bits and bobs that have gone up recently include the fixture list for this term, an important note about personal insurance, and a very early-doors section about BUSA 2007 which we are hosting!
