Iconography and Iconology: Theological thinking of the early church behind the veneration of Icons

Dr Elena Nariskaya

Wednesday 15th May 2013

This presentation will look at the development of church art and its place in theology. Various concepts about theological appropriation of icon veneration vs idolatry will be discussed. The talk will address stereotypes and misunderstandings of the tradition of icon veneration from both a theological and a historical perspective, providing a more in depth understanding of the place of icons in spiritual life, as well as the life of the Christian church.

All lectures listed are at the Oriental Museum at 7.30pm unless otherwise stated. Use the Elvet Hill House entrance for Lecture Room EH009. Lectures are free to Friends. For visitors the cost is £3 (£1 concession).
