Loans and acquisitions
The Oriental Museum owes its very existence to the private passions of collectors fascinated by Egyptian antiquities, Chinese ceramics, jades and hardstones and many other areas of Asian art and material culture.
Bequests, acquisitions and loans from private collections continue to play a key role in the Museum's development. If you are a private collector and would like to discuss such initiatives, please contact the Curator, Craig Barclay, on 0191 334 5694 or at c.p.barclay@dur.ac.uk. We will be happy to advise on provenance and conservation issues relating to any items you might wish to lend or donate to the Museum.
We also work closely with public collections in our specialist areas, and are always willing to discuss inter-Museum loans and joint exhibitions.
Donations
We rely on the generous support of individuals, companies, trusts and foundations to help us to acquire, display and research new material, as well as supporting teaching within the University and carrying out valuable education and outreach work with local schools and the wider community.
Donations may be given for a specific purpose, or generally to help our work. They may be made anonymously or by name. You can now donate online.
