Volunteering for Durham Nightline is tough but rewarding. To volunteer you must attend one of our training weekends, which are held three times a year. To attend a training weekend you must sign-up. Details about the training weekends are given below. Follow the link at the bottom for more information.
Requirements
No previous experience is required to become a Nightline volunteer. To become a volunteer, you must first attend one of our training weekends. After attending our training weekend, you can choose to go for interview. A good understanding of spoken English is required to enter the interview process.
Our training weekend is open for everyone. We encourage all Durham and Queens students to come along, even if they are not thinking of joining Nightline but are simply interested in welfare or listening skills.
If you are accepted, and join Nightline, there are no requirements for the number of duties you have to do, although it is recommended you do at least one duty and one reserve a term.
Training Weekend
If you would like to volunteer then you will need to come along to one of our training weekends. We hold three of these every year: in February, June and October. The date and venue of the next training weekend can be found in the event calendar. Details of how to sign-up are given below.
The weekend will consist of a number of talks given by experts in their field, such as depression, suicide, loss, identity and listening skills. A series of group workshops with role-plays will take place between speakers. Both Durham and Queens students are very welcome to attend.
The Nightline Training Weekend can be emotionally demanding, so if you are currently going through a difficult time we would like you to seriously consider whether or not attending the weekend would be best for you at this time.
Signing Up for a Training Weekend
Please note we only accept email sign-ups two weeks to 2 days before the training weekend. If you wish to sign-up then send an email to nightline@durham.ac.uk giving your name, college, year of study, course, mobile number and contact email address.
A university wide e-mail will be sent out a few weeks before each training weekend, explaining the training weekend and sign-up. Please keep an eye out for these as the training weekend approaches.
The training weekend is usually held at Gilesgate Sports College. See the map below for directions.
