Durham Nightline
Nightline was set up in 1973 by three students who volunteered at Durham Samaritans.
They felt that there might be some students who would be reluctant to approach outsiders for help and would find it easier to speak to another student.
Since 1973 Durham Nightline has been guided by the same five principles:
Confidentiality:
All aspects of your contact with Nightline will remain completely private.
Anonymity:
We do everything possible to protect the anonymity of our callers, drop-ins and Nightliners.
We won't ask you for any identifying details and calls cannot be traced. If we see a caller or drop-in in a situation outside of Nightline we will make no reference to their call or visit.
Non-judgemental:
We will unconditionally support you, whatever your situation, actions or beliefs.
We won't judge.
Non-directive / Non-advisory:
We will not attempt to change your views or push you towards any decision. We won't tell you what to do and we aren't able to give you any advice.
We'll explore your situation with you, and respect your right to make your own decisions.
Unaffiliated:
Nightline is an independent and autonomous organisation.
We have no religious or political affiliations.

Volunteering at Durham Nightline is a tough but rewarding job. To volunteer you must attend one of our training weekends, which are held twice a year. Follow the link on the left for more information.
