Expert comments on the US elections

(5 March 2008)

Durham University expert in American politics, Professor John Dumbrell, comments on the current situation in the US elections.

Professor Dumbrell, from the School of Government and International Affairs, said: “The race for the Democratic Party nomination is now deadlocked between Hillary Clinton, who offers a ‘problem-solving’ approach to being president, and Barack Obama, who concentrates on inspiration and ‘vision’. “Though making for a very exciting contest, the current stalemate – following the Ohio and Texas primaries – may damage the Democrats’ chances of beating Republican candidate John McCain in the November general election. “The election heat in the short term is likely to die down somewhat, with the next key event being the Pennsylvania primary on 22 April.”
