Sharia law will undermine British values, says expert

(8 February 2008)

Adopting some parts of Islamic Sharia law in the UK will undermine core British values according to a Durham University expert.

Dr Christopher Davidson’s comments come in response to the Archbishop of Canterbury’s suggestion that the adoption of some Sharia law in the UK seems "unavoidable". Dr Davidson, lecturer in Middle East politics, said: “Having parallel legal systems for citizens of differing confessions undermines core British values. “Certainly the vast majority of Muslim Britons accept that there needs to be equality before the law for all British citizens, and accept that the legal culture of the host nation should remain in place.”
