Durham rowers win British championships

A team of rowers from Durham University won the British university rowing championships for the fourth time running this weekend.

Around 150 Durham rowers took part in the British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) championships in Nottingham for the Victor Ludorum Trophy. Universities from around the country compete in 42 different rowing events over three days. The events ranged from eights to singles, pairs, quads, junior and novice categories and more. Each event is scored and the winner is the university which achieves the highest overall score. Newcastle University rowing club came second. Martin Hill, President of the Durham University Boat Club said: “It was particularly tough and challenging this year, with some strong competition. “I think the Durham team won because it has depth and strength in all areas - we have the advantage of having some excellent rowers in our colleges,” added Martin, a third-year Politics, Philosophy and Economics student who competed in the championship fours, quads and eights. Peter Warburton, Director of Sport at Durham University said: “Durham’s fourth consecutive success at the national rowing championships is testament to the breadth of rowing talent which is being developed at this University. “Every student worked extremely hard and this result is even more impressive when you consider that they are in the process of revising for their exams, some of them finals.” Both Durham and Newcastle will be competing in the forthcoming annual Northumbrian Water Boat Race, on the River Tyne on Sunday 13 May.
