Success for Durham rowers at Under-23 World Championships
(27 July 2006)
Three Durham University rowers, representing Great Britain, have picked up silver medals at the Under-23 World Rowing Championships in Hazewinkel, Belgium.
Sophie Hosking, of Trevelyan College, won silver in the Women’s Lightweight Single Sculls event. Despite a hard-fought attempt at gold, Sophie was beaten by Alexandra Tsiavou of Greece but managed to hold off stiff competition, predominantly in the form of France’s Clement Willaume, to clinch the silver medal. Louisa Reeve, of Hatfield College, and Frances Fletcher, of St Cuthbert’s Society, won silver in the Women’s Quadruple Sculls event. In a race that Romania led for a great amount of time, but never truly dominated, the British team pulled off a highly impressive second half charge to win silver and force the German team into third place.
