Female fire chief honoured

The UK’s first female fire chief, and former Durham student, was honoured by the University of Sunderland at one of its annual graduation ceremonies.
Susan Johnson OBE is Chief Executive of County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service and is both the first woman and first non-uniformed chief executive to lead a fire and rescue service in the UK. The Durham University graduate is responsible for 690 employees and a budget of over £27m and oversees the delivery of community safety to more than half a million people throughout County Durham and Darlington. Susan gained an MBA (Master of Business Administration) from Durham University following her first class honours degree in business studies from the University of Sunderland. Susan was awarded an Honorary Fellowship for her outstanding contribution to business and public life in the North-East. Malcolm Gerrie, a former Durham student and successful television producer, was also honoured by the University of Sunderland when he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Arts in recognition of his outstanding achievements in the fields of broadcasting and live events.
