Excellent Henley performance by women’s boat crews
(23 June 2006)
Durham University had another magnificent Henley event with the women's top boat recording a win and others putting in a high-achieving display.
The crew was Emma Steel of Collingwood College, Frances Fletcher, St Cuthbert's Society, Andrea Hoskins, Grey College and Maggie Paxton of Hatfield College. Naomi Hoogesteger lost in the final of the single sculls but is now almost certain to be selected for the World Student Games in the GB four. In the women’s coxed four, Durham’s second boat, lost in the semi-final. Director of Sport Peter Warburton said: “It takes great skill to get boats through to the last day after five days of racing and to get three through is testament to the work of the Durham women rowers and our coaching staff.” On another sporting high note, the Durham archery team, who three years ago were not in the top twenty in the country, finished third in the British Archery Championships.
