North East football fans planning to enter fully into the spirit of the World Cup can learn German as part of Durham University’s ‘Languages for All’ programme. The Durham University Language Centre has a brand new summer season of courses beginning on 8th May in addition to their annual programme running from October to March. The extra sessions offer members of the public – as well as staff and students - the opportunity to learn a new language in time for summer holidays and especially a chance to get a grasp of German language ready for the World Cup.
As they (half) say in German: “The Fussballfreunde who are lucky enough to get a ticket for ein Platz in Der Stadion during Die Weltmeisterschaft in Deutschland will be able to watch the best Spieleren in the world and weigh up who has the best Angriff or the strongest Verteidgung. From the Anstoss to the Schlusspfiff they will want to see entertaining Fussball, plenty of Toren for their own side and keine fur Der Gegner. If one of our Speileren gets a rote Karte, we can always blame Der Schiedrichter. In Der Vorrundenspiel every Sieg really counts, and in Das Achtelfinale, we want to avoid Das Unentschieden that will mean going into an Elfmeterschiessen. “ ****
Mary Fender, Languages for All programme coordinator said: “These exciting and affordable courses will not only give people the basic language skills they would need when travelling abroad but will also further their foreign language skills in general, which could benefit them not only whilst on holiday but in their jobs as well.”
The annual ‘Languages for All’ programme is currently enrolling for its sessions in October – March 06/07. There is a wide range of foreign languages available and also a British Sign Language course. Theses courses are open to members of the public, staff and students.
The Durham University Language Centre courses are delivered by experienced language teachers. They range from beginner to advanced level and include Arabic, Dutch, Farsi (Persian), French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.
Annually the ‘Languages for All’ programme attracts around 700 students. Most courses are structured into 18 x 2 hour sessions with intensive 5-day programmes available. A certificate of attendance is issued to students on completion. Participants also have the option to take an externally accredited examination in some languages.
All sessions are delivered in teaching rooms at the University’s Durham and Stockton campuses.
The summer courses cost from £50 details are available from Mary Fender 0191 3342241 m.j.s.fender@durham.ac.uk
****Or, put another way, “The fans who are lucky enough to get a ticket for a seat in the stadium during the World Cup in Germany will be able to watch the best players in the world and weigh up who has the best attack or the strongest defence. From the kick-off to the final whistle they will want to see entertaining football, plenty of goals for their own side and none for the opposition. If one of our players gets a red card, we can always blame the referee. In the opening round every victory really counts, and in knock-out stage, we want to avoid the draw that will mean going into an penalty shoot-out. “
