Winning website at Student Journalism Awards

(16 November 2005)

Durham21.co.uk has been voted the NUS/Mirror website of the year at the 2005 National Student Journalism Awards in London.

The ceremony held at London’s Canary Wharf on 12 November saw Durham beating off stiff competition from various other universities, including Warwick, who took this years runner up prize.

Speaking about the award, outgoing editor Barney Britton, who donated the £500 cash prize to durham21 commented: "Winning this award for the forth year since our inception is a wonderful achievement, and one which more than anything, reflects the hard work and commitment of our team of writers and editors.

Durham21 has grown immensely in the five years that we've been online, and to have been voted best website four times now is testament to the consistently high quality of our output, and the active involvement from our loyal readers.”

The judges when making their decision singled out durham21's presentation of content, its innovative Fresher's minisite, as well as the real-time comments forum for special commendation.

The second award of the night for durham21 went to Chris Prior. He came second in the 'Best Student Critic' section, taking home a cash prize for his review of an Interpol gig in February 2005.
