Durham student goes to the UN

(30 August 2005)

PhD student Angelo Salting Goode of Durham University is taking up an internship at the United Nations’ headquarters in New York, USA.

Angelo will be working for two months at the Department of Political Affairs, which provides advice and support on all political matters to the Secretary-General in the exercise of his global responsibilities under the Charter relating to the maintenance and restoration of peace and security.

Under the internship programme, graduate students from diverse academic backgrounds may be assigned to United Nations offices to enchace their educational experience through practical work assignments. They gain an insight into the work of the United Nations and the UN offices benefit from the assistance of highly qualified students from a variety of specialised and professional fields.

At Durham, Angelo’s research interests examine notions of identity, class, gender, religion, ethnicity and citizenship, and how states attempt to address potential conflict between these issues. Recently, his research has evolved to include the international political economy and the World Trade Organisation. This covers also ‘Middle Power’ theory, and the implications that these rising powers have for international political and economic development. Angelo, as a student at Ustinov College, said: “I’m excited to take part in the international political process at the UN. Not only does this opportunity help further my goal of enhancing the multi-cultural mission, it is also a rare privilege to have the chance to contribute a little, in my own way, to the fight waged by our former Chancellor Sir Peter Ustinov against prejudice, racism, marginalisation and discrimination of all sorts.”

Angelo grew up mostly in the Philippines, but has international experience that includes Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Guam, the United States, France, Spain, Vienna, the Czech Republic, Ireland and the United Kingdom. He received his BA in Diplomacy and World Affairs from Occidental College, Los Angeles and his MA in International Relations from Durham University. He is currently entering his second year of PhD study in Politics at Durham’s School of Government and International Affairs. Angelo is one of approximately six students from British Universities who will be working at the UN from September this year.
