Results for Durham University rowing at Henley Royal Regatta
(14 July 2005)
Durham University Boat Club (DUBC) has crowned a magnificent rowing year with a double success at the prestigious Henley rowing venue.
After splendid results at Henley Women’s Regatta, the men’s rowers enjoyed spectacular success at the Henley Royal Regatta.
The Men’s Student Coxed 4’s, made up of Noel Jones (St Cuthbert’s Society), John Foster (Collingwood), Paddy Thomas (Hatfield), Phil Evans (Hild/Bede) and Tom Hill (St Aidans) won in the final against the National University of Ireland, by 3 ½ lengths, setting a new course record of 7:26 minutes.
In getting to the final, they saw off crews from Tulane University, Imperial College and Oxford Brookes University A.
In combination with the women’s win recently, it does appear as if the dedicated athletes and coaches have put Durham at the top of British University Rowing.
The most recent win at Henley, up until now had been The Visitor’s Cup in 1992. So considering all the other successes this year, Durham was due a change in fortune.
Director of Sport, Dr Peter Warburton said, “A magnificent end to a fantastic sporting year. The team should be very proud of what they have achieved for their university. The supporters have been amazing with both Durham students and alumni lining the banks, spurring them on. It is also a great tribute to Wade Hall-Craggs and his coaching team, who have put in so many long hours to coach Durham to success.”
A combined crew of Durham, Nottingham and Leander also did well in making it to the final of the only women’s event at Henley Royal Regatta, the Remenham Cup. The team consisted of three current Durham students, three former Durham students, one from Nottingham, and two from Leander Club. In the end they lost out in the final to Thames Rowing Club A by three-quarters of a length.
