Getting in touch with the past during National Archaeology Week

(13 July 2005)

As part of the nation-wide National Archaeology Week celebrations, Durham University’s Old Fulling Mill Museum will be offering visitors the chance to handle real artefacts from its collections.

From Monday 18 to Friday 22 July, visitors to the museum will have a chance to handle some of the museum’s hidden treasures and to talk to the archaeologists who curate them.

Sessions take place at the Old Fulling Mill Museum of Archaeology, which is locate on the banks of the River Wear below the Cathedral Monday 18th – Friday 22nd July, from 11:00 am– 2:00 pm each day. The handling sessions will complement the museum’s current family-friendly exhibition, At Home with the Romans.

Curator Craig Barclay said: “We are delighted to be hosting Touching the Past sessions as part of National Archaeology Week. This celebration of all things archaeological offers local people and visitors to Durham a unique chance to get closer to some of the amazing artefacts that have been found in our region”

The Old Fulling Mill Museum of Archaeology can be reached from Framwellgate Bridge to Silver Street and down the steps to the lower towpath. Also from Palace Green, through the Windy Gap vennel, located between the University Library and the Department of Music, both on the western side of Palace Green. Below the Cathedral, a sign and some steps lead down to the museum. The first floor and permanent exhibit is accessible, and parking drop off outside the front door of the museum is possible by prior arrangement.
