Durham Castle exhibition exposes a battle with wear and tear

(8 July 2005)

The Palace Green Library of Durham University playing host to an exhibition, “Work in Progress- 200 Years of Restoration and Conservation at Durham Castle”

This display [from Monday 11th July until Friday 23rd September 2005] highlights the work that is necessary to keep such an old and magnificent building, which is home to University College and part of a World Heritage Site, in such good shape when it is in constant use.

Visitors can see what kind of work needs to be done to maintain this architectural masterpiece, which attracts thousands of visitors each year, such as major projects of the past and present. Due to the wear and tear of daily use and the damaging effects of the British weather, the castle could not be enjoyed as it is today without a continuous programme of conservation, restoration and, at times, wholesale re-building.

A big wooden model of the Castle, dating back to the 1920’s to 1930’s is on display. Since the model is normally to be found in the Castle itself, it can usually not be seen by the general public.

Come and see for yourself how many people and how much money and sheer hart work it takes to keep a Norman Castle In shape even in the 21st century.

Entry to the exhibition is free and opening hours are from 9.00 until 17.00 on Monday to Friday.
