Flexible new MA routes
(27 June 2005)
Durham Business School is launching two new business-focused MA programmes this autumn.
Managers can enrol now for a one-year, full-time MA in Marketing and a unique MA in Enterprise Management.
Designed specifically to meet the needs of middle and senior managers from medium sized enterprises, the MA in Enterprise Management runs over 27 months.
Extra flexibility is built into the programme as managers can return to the School at any time within a five-year period to undertake subsequent levels of the programme; building up from certificate level to a diploma and then masters.
Dr Bill Snaith, who heads up the School’s Medium Sized Enterprise team, says: “We have drawn upon extensive experience working with medium sized businesses to create a truly flexible programme, enabling managers can apply practical experiences back in the workplace, rather than simply learning theory.
“Commitment from all sides is essential in getting the most out of the programme. Students will get full support from staff within the Business School. They also need ongoing encouragement from their line managers and to be in a position to make a difference to their company’s direction.
“The potential results are incredibly exciting for both the individual and the organisation. We are already delivering the MA overseas and know we have a winning model.”
Unlike many MA courses, students are not required to complete a major dissertation; instead, this is replaced by a work-based project.
Managers completing the postgraduate Certificate stage, and continue with the course, will also gain the Executive Diploma in Management from the Chartered Management Institute and will be eligible for professional membership.
This part-time programme can be delivered at Durham Business School or on a company’s premises and in any country.

The full-time, one year MA in Marketing is aimed at new or recently qualified graduates from any discipline and is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), with exemptions for successful students who wish to join the CIM.
