SCA and DSU Litter pick

(22 June 2005)

Volunteers of Student Community Action (SCA) celebrated the end of exams in a very different way to most other students. On Thursday 9th June 55 dedicated volunteers headed out to the coast to take part in a litter pick at Seaham Beach

The inherent reward of some extremely hard work for such a worthwhile cause was aided by the sun popping its head out from behind the clouds to shine its warm rays on the volunteers.

After being split into groups, the volunteers proceeded to meticulously comb the beach. Local passers by were amazed at the work taking place. So much so, that it caused one gentleman to say that it had changed his perception of what young people were doing.

Duncan Gomes, Coast and Countryside Ranger from Easington Council, was enormously grateful for the students’ help on the day that was organised by Kate Hand, Durham Student Union (DSU) Environment Officer, together with SCA.

Current Chair of SCA, Roxy Rocks-Engelman, who was running the event on the day, could not have been happier about the turn out and the result of the hard work. She said, “It was a tremendous success and a great day for all involved.”
