Team Durham presents ‘The Big Fun Sports Day’ for local schoolchildren
(13 June 2005)
This week 140 schoolchildren from five local primary schools will be given a morning of free coaching from members of Durham University’s top sporting clubs.
On Wednesday 15 June 140 pupils from Bowburn Junior School, Ludworth Primary School, Sherburn Hill Primary School, Ushaw Moor Junior School and West Rainton Primary School, will have a chance to try Tennis, Hockey, Rugby, Netball, Basketball and Cricket.
The event will be held at the Graham Sports Centre, Maiden Castle, where the children will experience playing on top quality sports facilities. The coaching will run from 10am until 2:30pm.
There will also be lunchtime demonstrations put on for the children from other University Sports Clubs, such as Archery, Fencing, Trampoline Volleyball and Ultimate Frisbee.
The aim of the day is to promote a wide variety of sports to the children, especially introducing them to new activities.
To help promote sport in these schools further, once the children leave in the afternoon, eight University Sports Clubs will be running a series of sporting events for the University Students and in the process raising money for the schools to spend on sports equipment.
A quarter of the money raised will also be donated to Sport in Action Zambia, a foundation set up by Team Durham and adopted as its official charity. The fundraising aim is to be able to donate around £200 to each of the schools involved.
This event is further evidence of Team Durham’s ongoing commitment to promoting sports throughout the local community.
