Durham cricket makes history

(10 June 2005)

The players of Durham University Cricket Centre of Excellence (UCCE) are continuing to build on their extremely good start to the season, making another piece of history in the British University Cricket Championships

For the first time since 2000, when the Centres of Excellence for cricket were established, Durham Men’s First, Second and Third team, and the Women’s First team all made it to the semi-finals of the British University Sports Association (BUSA) Championships - something no other university achieved this year - and three reached the finals.

Men’s 1st team beat Cambridge by two wickets with a total of 254 runs for 8, aided by Captain Will Smith’s fifth century of the year. They meet Loughborough in the final of the Championship in Canterbury on Tuesday June 14th.

The Durham Women’s 1st team also play Loughborough (13th June) after seeing off a Cambridge University side with 174 for 6 with three overs remaining to Cambridge’s 173. Durham Men’s 2nds struggled to answer the 180 runs University of Wales, Cardiff, losing half their wickets for less than 100, but rallied to win on 181 for 6. They face Brighton in the final (15th June)..
