Keeping fit and healthy is easy at Queen’s Campus, Stockton
(11 May 2005)
Students and staff at Durham University’s Queen’s Campus in Stockton have no excuse for not keeping fit and healthy this week.
Staff from the Sports Development Office have put together a varied programme of activities and information as part of Health and Lifestyle Week (9th-13th May) to promote better eating, better exercise and better awareness of healthy living.
Yoga breathing techniques, lunchtime walks and cycle rides around the campus, free blood pressure tests, five-a-side football, free head and shoulder massage and free healthy drinks are all part of the drive to show how exercise and diet can improve health.
Displays and exhibitions from a number of local sports activity organisations and health information services are promoting a range of healthy activities and lifestyle advice.
Those represented during Health and Lifestyle Week includes Stepping Out in Stockton, Tees Active, Tees Wildlife Centre, Sustrans, Middlesbrough Environment City, Meningitis Awareness and Tees White Centre. Information on smoking cessation, drugs and alcohol awareness is also freely available. Healthy eating is always on the menu at Queen’s Campus where the Catering Team has recently achieved the highest level of standards in food hygiene, service and healthy eating by being awarded all three levels in the Food for Health Award Scheme. The Food For Health Award recognises and rewards the important contribution that caterers and food providers can make to the health of their customers. It also recognises that healthy food, hygienically prepared and served in a smoke-free environment can contribute to improved health and reduce the risk of serious diseases.
The Waterside Room, overlooking the River Tees seats up to 300 people and offers the University Campus population of over 1,900 staff and students extensive breakfast-to-dinner menu choices, many of which are home-made, healthy options.
