Wall Street at their fingertips for Durham Business School students

(12 April 2005)

Durham Business School has launched a bespoke stock market trading simulation website.

The system means that students on the MSc programmes can trade a plethora of major European US and Australasian securities using real time data.

Lecturers at the School combine use of the ‘Stock-Trak’ system with classroom learning.

Students can be asked to base the management of the portfolio on specific criteria by speculating and hedging on hypothetical situations using theoretical tools including asset allocation and security selection.

They will be graded on a written assignment based on their trading strategy rather than their portfolio value. The system is especially helpful for those considering a career as stockbrokers or in investment banking.

Commenting on the simulation, Dr Emilios Galariotis, Director of MSc programmes at Durham Business School said: “We are the first business school in the world to offer our students a branded, custom built Stock-Trak trading experience with all available securities. We can see by the amount of time students are spending on the system that it is proving very popular. Apparently, it can be quite addictive!”
