Runs record for Alistair Maiden and Durham cricket

(12 April 2005)

With a record-shattering performance, Durham University student Alistair Maiden helped his Durham University’s Cricket Centre of Excellence (UCCE) side to pull off a heroic draw in their match against Somerset.

After finishing on 156 not out overnight, his total stood at 211 not out when Durham declared at 433 for 4.

Not only was Durham’s total of 433 runs their highest ever first-class score, with his 211 runs Maiden becomes the first cricketer in the UCCE to score a double century.

Maiden (Collingwood College, Management) achieved his lengthy and impressive innings off 408 balls and contained twenty two 4’s and one 6.

Durham University first XI had found it hard in their first match of the season when Somerset declared at 580 for 6 on the first day.

They changed the shape of the match on the second day however, coming out with all guns blazing, with Will Smith (Collingwood, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry) scoring 156 runs, and Alistair Maiden scoring 156 not out.

Only James Foster (103) and Alex Louden (172) had scored centuries for Durham in first-class matches until now. Will Smith and Alistair Maiden effectively doubled that record in one match.

The match resulted in a draw, which is a fantastic result for Durham UCCE. This spectacular performance will certainly boost their confidence for their next match against Leicestershire on 27th April.

Director of Sport, Peter Warburton said, “A magnificent achievement!”
