Durham graduate tipped to succeed Durham graduate

(28 February 2005)

Durham graduate Kevin Lygo is being widely tipped to succeed Lorraine Heggessey, another Durham graduate, as controller of BBC1.

So far he has denied any intention to move from his current position as Director of television for Channel 4, saying, “BBC1 is an incredibly important channel, and an incredibly challenging and wonderful job for someone….but it’s not me.”

Lygo protests that he has not been offered the job. “Honest to God, I have not been approached by anyone at the BBC and I can’t believe they will.” But that doesn’t mean that they won’t. And who knows what his answer would be if they did.

Reported by Ian Burrell for The Independent on 28th February 2005.
