Year 12 students stars for the day

(23 February 2005)

March the 4th is Planetarium Day for Year 12 Students.

Durham University Student Community Action (SCA) is one of the biggest societies in the University. It co-ordinates opportunities for University students to volunteer in the Durham and Stockton areas. In total there are over 700 students actively volunteering to help in the community.

The work at Queen’s Campus Stockton in particular has grown extensively this year. Its main focus has been developing education projects in the Stockton area, aiming to raise the aspirations of young people with regards to Higher Education.

In pursuit of this goal Friday 4th March will be Planetarium Day. In partnership with Dr John McCue and the Planetarium project at Wynyard Woodland Park, the SCA has organised an A-level Astronomy Study day, at Queen’s Campus, Stockton. The day will run from 10.00 am until 3.30 pm.

The morning session, which lasts from 10.00 am until 12.00 pm, will be based at the Planetarium and will consist of presentations on the night sky and A-level Physics study topics such as; The Big Bang; The Expanding Universe, Hubble’s Law and the Life Cycle of Stars.

In the afternoon, from 1.00 pm until 3.30 pm the students will go to Queen’s Campus, Stockton where the activities will be based upon topics studied at the Planetarium in the morning.

The students will also get a tour of Queen’s Campus.

SCA volunteers will be on hand throughout the day. In particular, they will be helping to explain the practical tasks in the afternoon.
