Commiserations to Durham’s University Challenge Team

(14 February 2005)

The team fought a brave battle, but in the end they just lost out to Balliol College Oxford who had 215 points to their 195.

With Durham taking the lead in the beginning the contest was a very exciting neck and neck race all the way till the end. Unfortunately at the final gong Balliol College had just edged ahead.

The final result does not erase an admirable performance by the team, consisting of captain Alex Hooper (Hatfield College), Helen Appleton (St Mary’s College), Mark Wallace (St Chad’s College) and Robin Zigmond, (Hatfield College), of which they can be very proud.

According to Jeremy Paxman their score of 195 points was the highest losing score so far.

After taking the title in 2000, a win this year would have meant Durham were the only university, apart from teams from London and Oxbridge Universities, to take the title twice since the show started up again in 1995.

There’s always next year!
