Obituary: Bill Gaines- Doyen of USA-Durham Student Links

Dr William Louis Gaines, who led the programme that gave thousands of US students the chance to study in Durham has died.
After being in poor health in recent years, Dr Gaines died aged 82 Colleagues in both countries will remember him from the days when his Presidency of the Institute of European Studies (IES) kept him in close contact with Durham University. He was also a fellow at Trevelyan College for Michaelmas term in 1993.
In 1986 he was awarded the rare distinction, as an American, of being made an Honorary Officer of the order of the British Empire and was promoted to an Honorary CBE for his significant contribution to the Marshall Scholarship Scheme.
In December of 1992 Dr Gaines received an honorary degree as a Doctor of Civil Law from the University as one of North America’s leading promoters of international links in higher education.
