Fox Was Too Fast for the Rest

This year’s North of England Cross-Country Championships junior women’s title was won by Aiveen Fox, a second year psychology student of Durham University. By winning the race at Berry Edge in Consett, Fox, a native of Morpeth, improves considerably on her 12th place in the event last year.

The Van Mildert College member, who trains 5 or 6 times in the week, had not expected to win, “I was so shocked, I kept thinking ‘Do I have another lap?’ even though I knew I didn’t really.”

Fox admits that living in Durham helped her in this race, “Living in Durham gives you a lot of hill practice and we had a really steep one to climb.” It was at the steepest part of the 6 km race that Fox took the lead and she kept that lead all the way to the finish.

Aiveen’s next race will be on Saturday in Leeds, where she hopes to improve on her previous 44th place in what she describes as a “tough course and a hard race.” From then on she will be concentrating on organising the Durham University Cathedral Relays on 12 February, and performing well in the English National Cross Country Championships.
