Revolutionary displays at Durham's Oriental Museum
(16 January 2005)
Durham University’s Oriental Museum is the venue for a stunning exhibition of revolutionary images from the People’s Republic of China.
The Political Body, which runs from Sunday 16th January until Thursday 17th March, offers people in the North East a unique opportunity to see a collection of poster art.
The political posters, which span the period from the mid 1960s to the early 1980s, mirror China's shifting political position in those turbulent years. Stark iconic and militaristic images of the Cultural Revolution are displayed alongside gentler works produced as People's Republic slowly began to open up to the west.
Kevin McLoughlin, Deputy Curator of the Oriental Museum said: "We are absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to mount this exceptional display. With thirty posters and a wide range of images of revolutionary ballet on display, The Political Body exhibition offers people of Durham a rare chance to experience for themselves the propoganda art of China's Cultural Revolution."
