Tsunami Disaster: University offers help and support

The University has expressed concern for anyone affected by the Indian Ocean disaster and offers guidance, help and support in a message to all students and staff.

In his email the Vice-Chancellor Sir Kenneth Calman, says: "At the time of writing it is not clear how many students and staff of the University have been directly affected, but the colossal nature of the event will inevitably mean that the lives of many of our community will have been touched by it.

"As part of that academic community you will already be aware that we draw strength from our ability to support our students and staff through whatever challenges they may face, and you have my assurance that we shall do whatever we can to help you through this difficult time."

The University has special services to support International Students, Student Counselling and in the Student Union Welfare Office, and also offers help to staff.

For the longer term, the University will also be looking at ways in which staff or students may be able to join in projects as part of the huge recovery and rebuilding operation that will be needed all around the tsunami-hit area.
