Former member of staff appeals for books for Mercy Ships
(10 January 2005)
A Durham group, including a former member of the University’s library staff, is organising a collection of books for Mercy Ships, a charity of over 25 years standing which owns a fleet of 3 ocean-going ships on mission to African and Central American countries as floating hospitals. Thousands of people have benefited from life-giving surgical operations on ship; their work also embraces social and construction projects.
The MV Africa Mercy is presently in the Tyne for its conversion from Danish rail ferry to hospital ship. She is expected to sail in Summer 2005 to join the fleet.
Books are needed to set up libraries for the crew and the on-board school for crew families:
- Good, up-to-date reference books
- Quality literature of educational and recreational value (books of particular interest are listed below, but additional similar titles are also needed)
Any book not needed by Mercy Ships will be used for another good cause.
Please deliver books to the collection point at:
Elvet Methodist Church, Old Elvet, Durham
(next to the University Office, Old Shire Hall)
Opening times for receipt of book donations:
Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 21 February to 17 March 2005 between 9.30 am and 12.00 noon.
Please label your gift “Mercy Ships”
