Jenny Hobbs, Principal of St Mary's College, paid tribute: "Sylvia joined St Mary's College in January 1974 and served very loyally for over 30 years."

"It was a great privilege for me to accompany her and her husband Ned, about 5 years ago, when she was presented with a piece of engraved glass from the Vice-Chancellor to mark her 25 years of service to the University."

The funeral is on Monday 22 November at 12.45pm at Bowburn Chapel, followed by a service at Durham Crematorium at 1.30pm and a gathering at the Working Men's Club, Bowburn.
