(25 October 2004)
The University of Durham Queen’s Campus in Stockton is always keen to provide every opportunity for local people of all ages to find out more about what the University does and what facilities it offers for higher education.
Queen’s Campus is Durham’s modern waterfront location in Stockton-on-Tees and offers a contemporary subject range from applied psychology, biomedical sciences, business and business finance, human sciences medicine and teacher training.
As part of its ongoing policy of widening participation and community engagement the University operates a number of local initiatives aimed at people of all ages and from all social and educational backgrounds.
Over 50 parents and children attended the latest Family Learning Week at Queen’s Campus and took part in hands on activities led by two anthropologists.
“It was a really enjoyable and rewarding event for those who came along to fin out for themselves, meeting students and staff in a fun learning environment aimed at demystifying some common-held views of universities,” said Carole Rushall, Widening Participation Officer.
Youngsters aged between 4 and 16 got involved in searching for bones and examining animal and human skeletons, while their parents took time to find out more about courses at the University. One has already booked a Foundation Course interview.
Any individual or local community group interested in finding out more about Human Science courses or other academic studies should contact Carol Rushall on 0191 334 0168.
In addition to special visits there are weekly campus tours every Wednesday in Durham City and Queen’s Campus, Stockton. To book a place contact : www.dur.ac.uk/admissions.
There is also a one-year full-time Foundation Course programme (which can also be taken on a part-time basis over two years) for those who do not have the traditional entry requirements to study for a university degree.
