Procession starts a new college tradition at Queen’s Campus

Freshers from John Snow College on the University of Durham’s Queen’s Campus in Stockton will be taking part in a welcome procession on Sunday 3rd. October.

With a record number of 380 new students in this year’s intake John Snow College is hoping that this first-ever welcome procession will mark the start of a new college tradition.

The gowned students and gowned University staff will be joined by families and friends in the procession from John Snow College Residences at Sorbonne Close to the Baptist Tabernacle in The Square Stockton-on-Tees.

The procession will leave the Residences at 3.30 p.m. and will cross the River Tees over the Millennium footbridge, down to Riverside Park, crossing the Riverside Road footbridge arriving at the Baptist Tabernacle for the welcome ceremony at 4.00 p.m.

They will be welcomed by Professor Martyn Evans, Principal of John Snow College, and Professor Robert Allison, Dean of Social Sciences and Health. After a number of formal presentations they will have a “getting to know you “informal meeting with College Tutors and other University teaching and non-teaching staff.

Professor Evans says : “We hope this event will mark the start of a fine John Snow College tradition. It will be a memorable way for our Freshers, their parents and friends to get to know the University and the Snow College community, as well as meeting fellow students. It also lets the people of Stockton witness another aspect of the life of their local University.”

The procession and welcome ceremony will be followed a more traditional Freshers’ social evening in the students’ union venue at The Rocket.
