Oriental Museum collections inspire local artists

Two group exhibitions, by local Durham exhibitors, currently on display at The Oriental Museum, are inspired by, reflect, and interpret the fascinating diversity of objects in the collections of the Oriental Museum.

These exhibitions, which open from today until December 22nd,offer visitors a unique opportunity to view the exciting interplay of creative inspiration, artistic technique and diverse artistic media that the Oriental Museum collections have inspired among local artists and students.

‘Spinning Yarns and Weaving Stories’
Friday 1st October – Wednesday 22nd December

‘Spinning Yarns and Weaving Stories’ is an exhibition by members of the Durham Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers which includes a wonderful variety of vibrantly coloured rugs, wall hangings scarves, tapestries and braids employing a variety of designs and techniques, all informed and stimulated by the oriental Museum collections.

‘Magic Carpets’
Friday 1st October – Wednesday 22nd December

‘Magic Carpets’ is the title of the exhibition at the Oriental Museum by the students from the Spennymoor Comprehensive School. The ‘Magic Carpets’ of the title suggests the voyages of the imagination undertaken by the students in their creative exploration of materials, images, motifs, and themes inspired by the fabulous objects in the collections of the Oriental Museum.

The Oriental Museum which is part of the University of Durham is open Mon-Fri 10am-5pm Sat & Sun 12-5pm Admission £1.50/75p/Family Ticket:£3.50
