Behind the scenes with local history

(10 September 2004)

An historic University of Durham library is offering the public a rare glimpse behind the scenes of its old buildings and collections (Saturday 11th September, 10am – 4pm).

The library which stands in the shadow of Durham Cathedral at Palace Green is opening its doors to visitors as its contribution to the Archive Awareness Campaign 2004.

The national scheme hopes to uncover the wealth of material contained in archives to the general public.

Visitors can expect to see an array of fascinating documents in the university’s Archives and Special Collections. Experts in the Conservation Unit will also be on hand to demonstrate the techniques used to preserve the parchment and paper documents, rare books and fine bindings.

There will also be a chance to explore the Old Buildings, including the fifteenth century Exchequer Building and one of the earliest libraries in the country, Bishop Cosin’s, dating back to 1679, which was used by members of Durham diocese.

The University Library on Palace Green is normally the domain of Durham students, so this is a unique opportunity to go behind closed doors and get a real taste of local history.

Sheila Hingley, Head of Heritage Collections at Durham University Library, said: “This is a marvellous opportunity to have a glimpse behind the scenes at the old documents, books and museum objects which are not normally on public display at one of the region’s longest established library collections.”

Tours of the Old Buildings and Conservation Unit will start at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm. There are limited numbers for each tour, so booking is recommended. Please call 0191 334 2932 or email pg.library@durham.ac.uk
