University mourns the death of two students

(28 April 2004)

Staff and students at the University of Durham are shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden, unrelated deaths of two students.

Roy Midgley (26) was in his third year at St Cuthbert’s Society working for a degree in Politics and History of the Middle East with Arabic. He came from Gloucestershire and shared a house with other students in the Gilesgate area of Durham.

Martin Trotter, was in his second year of the Medicine Phase 1 degree at Queen’s Campus. He was a member of George Stephenson College and came from Northern Ireland. Martin was a mature student who had previously worked as a midwife.

Police are not treating either of the deaths as suspicious.

Messages of sympathy are going from the College and from the Vice-Chancellor on behalf of the University.
