Durham’s rowers make history

(10 March 2004)

Durham University women achieved their best ever result at the Head of the River on the Thames over the weekend of 6th and 7th of March.

Their ultimate goal was to achieve a top six ranking in Great Britain.

Two hundred and eight three crews entered the head from all over Europe with Durham, for the second year running, entering more crews that any other club or university in the country.

After their magnificent result of ninth last year the 1st eight moved up two places to seventh. They were beaten by the Dutch trial eight for the Olympics, a GB eight, Leander, Thames, University of London past and present and the Oxford varsity crew.

This achievement places Durham, for the first time in our history, in the top six rowing establishments in Britain.

The second eighth created their own history by finishing 29th, winning the second eight pennant beating all but five other University first eights.

To put this all in context we were not ranked in the top fifty crews in Britain five years ago.
