Treating nothing with nothing?

(9 March 2004)

Professor Pali Hungin OBE, Dean of Medicine at the University of Durham leads a discussion on the constraints of diagnosis and treatment at Stockton Café Scientifique on Tuesday 16 March.

With an increasing number of patients presenting with problems that cannot be easily defined and for which there are no specific remedies, Professor Hungin will explore how current models of medical understanding might be able to explain this growing trend.

A distinguished General Practitioner with a wealth of clinical experience, acquired over the past 24 years as a GP at Eaglesclife Health Centre he has over 80 publications to his credit and has received numerous awards, including an OBE in 2000 for services to research in general practice. Much of his research is in gastroenterology.

Stockton Café Scientifique is the latest in a growing network of Café Scientifiques in the UK and Europe. It aims to bring together a range of specialist speakers and the general public in a relaxed café setting. Anyone, from sixth formers to senior citizens, can engage with an expert about the latest ideas and trends without the need for a science background!

The initiative has been developed by John Snow College, one of the University of Durham's two colleges at Queen's Campus, Stockton with the support of Arc, The Wellcome Trust and the Café Scientifique network.

Café Scientifique will be held each month in Arc’s café atmosphere with doors opening at 7.30 p.m. for an 8 p.m. start.
