Technical staff of Durham University to receive Honorary Degrees
(14 January 2004)

Two long-serving technicians, who between them have given over 90 years of service to their University, are being honoured this week for their exceptional commitment.
Mr Bill Harris, Department of Chemistry will receive an MSc and Mr Malcolm Rolling, Department of Psychology will receive an MA during the congregation ceremonies in Durham Cathedral on Friday 16 January.
Both men are familiar faces in the University and the wider community. Bill Harris was a technician in the Department of Chemistry for 47 years, beginning as a Junior and retiring as a Senior Technician managing several staff. Generations of students appreciated his support and he inspired enthusiasm among would-be students by practical demonstrations at open days, schools projects and the annual festival of science.
Malcolm Rolling, who is still working in the Psychology Department, is renowned by colleagues for his hard work and cheerful disposition. He joined the Department of Psychology in 1958 and has risen to Chief Technician managing other technical staff in Durham and at Queen’s Campus. Well-known in the community, he was a player at Durham City Rugby Club for 32 years as well as being a past President.
Sir Kenneth Calman, Vice-Chancellor said, “The University relies on the quality of all its staff and their dedication, but occasionally there are individuals who stand out. Bill Harris and Malcolm Rolling are two such men. Inspiring students and colleagues alike they have contributed to their departments’ growth and success over the years. We are delighted to recognise their commitment and look forward to celebrating their achievements."
